Eye health exams for kids and adults

eye exam dilated 640x350.jpgEveryone needs regular eye exams for healthy eyes and vision. Many ocular diseases and vision conditions can go undetected for a long time, with no symptoms. Yet as these diseases progress, the success rate of treatment goes down considerably. The earlier we diagnose your problem, the earlier we can implement treatment. Routine eye exams are therefore the optimal way to prevent vision loss and promote healthy eyes for as long as possible. At Wink Eyecare Boutique, we will check your eyes thoroughly for any abnormalities or signs of a problem. At the forefront of eye care in Rockville, MD, Dr. Rachel Cohn uses superior skill and cutting-edge optometric technology to provide you with advanced eye examinations.

Pediatric eye exams may identify a vision condition that could compromise normal development and your child’s ability to learn. It’s estimated that 80% of all learning is taught via visual materials. An undetected problem with eyesight will put your child at a distinct disadvantage in the classroom. Even if your kid passed a vision screening in school, which is performed in many Rockville, MD, institutions, these tests do not uncover all types of eye conditions. We will test your child’s eyesight for much more than just visual acuity. Conveniently located to serve patients from Rockville, Maryland, the accuracy of our eye exams is unsurpassed in the region!

What happens at our comprehensive Rockville eye exam?

Every patient receives individualized attention in our clinic. Dr. Cohn will meet with you to discuss your personal situation and visual expectations, and the tests performed during your total eye evaluation will be designed accordingly.

Book An Eye Exam

The basic parts of our complete eye examination may include:

Case history: it’s important to share any visual complaints or symptoms, as well as tell us about your general health, medications and family history of eye conditions.

Preliminary eye tests: we’ll assess your eye mobility, peripheral awareness, color vision, and the reaction of your pupils to light.

Eye teaming/binocularity and accommodation tests: with functional vision, eyes must pair together to see well. Your ability to go back and forth between viewing near and distant objects will also be checked.

Visual acuity: we’ll ask you to read a chart of letters and numbers to evaluate the sharpness of your vision at various distances. Using a phoropter, we’ll also test refractive error to diagnose nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. You’ll need to look through different lenses and tell us which ones give the clearest vision. We’ll also inspect your eyes with a retinoscope to measure how light focuses with these different lenses.

Ocular health: Dr. Cohn will take a close look at your retina and inner eye tissues for signs of eye disease, such as macular degeneration and cataracts, with the help of a high-powered lens. We generally apply dilating eye drops before this part of the exam.

We may also use a tonometer to measure the inner pressure of your eyes. This painless procedure helps check for glaucoma.

Consultation: after we perform all of the necessary tests, we will meet with you to review our findings. If necessary, we will discuss our treatment recommendations with you to determine the best approaches.

Benefit from Advanced Diagnostic Tools

In addition to the basic steps of a comprehensive eye check-up, we are proud to offer a number of highly specialized procedures. Our range of hi-tech optometric devices raise Wink Eyecare Boutique to a level above the rest of the eye care practices in the area!

Our first-rate machinery in Rockville includes:

  • Corneal Mapping– a non-invasive method for generating 3D images of your corneal curvature. This auto-topographer exam is very useful for planning LASIK and fitting contact lenses expertly.
  • Optomap Digital Retinal Imaging– a quick, safe and painless (no dilation!) way to take a picture of your retina and store it for comparison from year to year. These images provide an effective way to track changes for diagnosing or monitoring many eye diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and macular degeneration.
  • iProfiler – for auto-refraction and auto-topography.
  • Visual Field Testing– using our specialized equipment, we check your peripheral vision to inspect for any vision loss, blind spots or abnormalities
  • iWellness Screening – For ages 35 and over, we offer this OCT screening. If further testing is needed, you will undergo a more thorough OCT screening.
  • Goldmann Applanation Tonometer – tests for glaucoma without a “puff test”!

We look forward to looking closely at your eyes.
